Republican lawmakers in the House and Senate are pushing for legislation that would mandate Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention beds be filled before undocumented immigrants are released. The bill, named after 12-year-old murder victim Jocelyn Nungaray, aims to prevent future tragedies by ensuring all available detention spaces are utilized.

Republican lawmakers in the House and Senate are making a renewed effort to mandate that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention beds be filled before undocumented immigrants are released from custody. This push is spearheaded by a bill named after 12-year-old murder victim Jocelyn Nungaray . Senator Ted Cruz , a Republican from Texas, and Representative Troy Nehls , also a Republican from Texas, are reintroducing the 'Justice for Jocelyn Act.

'The bill's key provision is requiring that every ICE detention bed be occupied before any undocumented immigrants can be released into the country's interior. Furthermore, even if all beds are filled, the bill mandates that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) exhaust all alternative measures before releasing migrants into the interior. These measures include enrolling them in continuous GPS monitoring through ankle bracelets or comparable devices. The bill is named in honor of Nungaray, who was tragically killed last year. Two undocumented immigrants are facing capital murder charges and accused of luring her under a bridge, binding her, and killing her before discarding her body in a river. Authorities confirmed that both individuals were in the country illegally. One arrived in March and the other in May. Both were released on an order of recognizance while awaiting their immigration court hearings. Senator Cruz stated to Fox News Digital, 'Last year, I commenced the fight for justice for 12-year-old Jocelyn. The aliens responsible for her murder crossed the southern border illegally and should have been detained by ICE,' He continued, 'Democrats' reckless open-border policies prevented ICE and Border Patrol agents from taking action, left thousands of detention center beds empty, and allowed these criminals to remain at large. Congress must act swiftly to ensure that no other American family ever has to endure what Jocelyn’s mother, Alexis Nungaray, has been compelled to face,' Cruz concluded, 'Standing alongside Alexis in this quest for justice has been an immense privilege, and I will not cease fighting until our communities are secure and justice prevails.' Representative Nehls echoed Cruz's sentiments, saying, 'I am proud to collaborate with my Texan colleague in the Senate, Senator Ted Cruz, in reintroducing the Justice for Jocelyn Act. Jocelyn Nungaray’s death was entirely avoidable. The Justice for Jocelyn Act would enhance the detention and tracking of undocumented aliens released into the United States and prioritize the safety of the American people.' He added, 'Congress, encompassing both the House and Senate, must immediately pass this legislation and deliver it to President Trump's desk as rapidly as possible.' This bill is one of several being introduced in Congress that focus on curbing illegal immigration. Last week, the House approved the Laken Riley Act, which mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with theft-related offenses. It has also advanced in the Senate. On Monday, Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, reintroduced 'Sarah’s Law,' which would require ICE to detain undocumented immigrants charged with killing another person. The incoming Trump administration is anticipated to launch a 'historic' mass deportation operation upon taking office next week, and it will enjoy the support of Republicans in both the House and Senate
