Caroline Fairly said in her recent primary election campaign that she wasn't accepting funds from her wealthy father. Records show he gave nearly $500k.

In the midst of a heated Republican primary in Amarillo earlier this year, state House candidate Caroline Fairly insisted she wasn’t getting financial help from her father, a prominent businessman and prolific GOP donor. 'I said, ‘Look, you can’t write me a check right now because everyone is going to assume you’re buying me a seat’,” she said in a radio interview in early February.

In a key Texas House race, voters ask if top candidate can step out of her wealthy father’s shadow In response to questions from Hearst Newspapers, Caroline Fairly acknowledged her father’s donations. Her answer in the radio interview was a mistake, she said, and she didn’t realize at that time her father had in fact already donated to her campaign.

After GOP runoff election, Greg Abbott says Texas House now has the votes to pass school vouchers “At this point, I will just pray for Caroline and hope she turns out to be an excellent choice. She’s certainly smart enough, and I hope strong enough to represent all of us and not just her wealthy father,” said Bulla, whose own campaign received about $168,000 from the Texas Realtor association and $156,000 from the Associated Republicans of Texas.

As Texas lawmakers consider school vouchers, does spending public dollars on private education work? In total, her campaign raised about $740,000 this year this year – more than two-thirds of which came from her father and his businesses entities. He first gave her campaign $100,000 on Jan. 31. That donation became public in a campaign finance report filed the week before the March 5 primary. He gave another $100,000 check on April 3.
