Google Voice is getting a boost with the addition of long-awaited three-way calling and a revamped UI, but the paid-only access to three-way calling raises concerns about its reach.
Google Voice is getting a much-needed update, focused on enhancing its calling features and user experience. A long-requested feature, three-way calling , is finally being implemented. This allows users to seamlessly add a third person to an ongoing call, enabling conversations involving three parties.
Google envisions this as being particularly helpful for situations like incorporating a translator into a call, consulting with legal advice, or streamlining introductions when transferring a call. To utilize this feature, users simply tap the 'Add' button during a call to select the individual they wish to include, then press 'Merge' to consolidate the calls. However, there's a significant caveat: this three-way calling functionality is exclusive to Google Workspace subscribers who have opted for specific plans: Voice Starter, Voice Standard, Voice Premier, SIP Link Standard, or SIP Link Premier. Users of the standard, free version of Google Voice will not have access to this option.Alongside the addition of three-way calling, Google Voice is receiving a redesigned in-call user interface, a change that benefits all users. This refresh aims to standardize the visual appearance across devices and adopt a more intuitive layout, drawing inspiration from Google Meet. The primary call controls, such as the keypad and mute button, are designed to be more prominent, while actions like transferring, holding, or merging calls remain easily accessible. Notifications, including indicators of who is on hold, will now appear clearly at the top of the screen. This visual update commenced its rollout on May 1st, 2025.While these updates demonstrate Google's continued commitment to the service, the absence of certain features, such as RCS, raises questions about the platform's direction. Limiting a fundamental function like three-way calling to paid subscribers may alienate users who rely on the free service, potentially causing them to seek alternatives
