Warby Parker on Monday announced that its AI smart glasses made with Google would be launched in 2026, marking a fresh challenge to Apple and Meta. Google is making another ambitious play in augmented reality by building lightweight, AI-powered smart glasses.
The collaboration, announced during The Android Show | XR Edition, is the clearest signal yet that Google plans to reenter a market dominated by Meta and Apple.It also marks the first time both companies have publicly committed to a release timeline, setting 2026 as the debut year for the first device. The partnership was first revealed earlier this year, but until now, neither company had confirmed when the glasses would hit the market.The move comes as competition in wearable computing intensifies.Meta has accelerated development of its Quest mixed-reality headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses, while Apple introduced the premium Vision Pro headset, carving out space in high-end spatial computing.Rivals raise stakesGoogle, long absent from the consumer smart-glasses space after shelving its original Glass project nearly a decade ago, is now positioning AI integration as the breakthrough that could finally make smart eyewear mainstream. The company says the initiative spans two categories of next-generation eyewear: AI glasses that function as intelligent, screen-free assistants equipped with speakers, microphones, and cameras; and Display AI glasses that include an in-lens display for private, heads-up access to navigation, translations, and other real-time information.Everyday AI eyewearAt the core of the platform is Google’s Gemini AI model, integrated through the Android XR ecosystem. The companies say this will enable multimodal interactions, meaning the glasses can see, hear, understand context, and respond naturally.The goal is to bridge the gap between bulky headsets and general-purpose wearables, delivering AI assistance that fits into daily life.Google emphasized that its partners are focused on style and comfort as much as computing power. In its blog post, it said it is working with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker to create “stylish, lightweight glasses.”The renewed push also signals Google’s broader ambition to regain ground in an industry where competitors have rapidly advanced.Meta, for instance, has invested aggressively in making its Ray-Ban smart glasses more capable, while Apple’s Vision Pro opened the door for premium spatial computing experiences.Google’s approach, however, aims for a middle path. The tech giant is aiming to build high-intelligence eyewear without the bulk, friction, or visibility that often accompany XR headsets. If the 2026 launch stays on track, it could mark Google’s most serious return to consumer AR since Glass.
