Google incorrectly flagged some retailers' products as counterfeit, and it cost one company $150,000 in lost revenue
their products so that they appear in search listings and the shopping section of Google's search engine. Google Merchant Center is a key sales driver because it helps consumers discover products.
"From time to time, over flagging may occur for a variety of reasons," the spokesperson said."No system is perfect, which is why advertisers always have the opportunity to appeal a decision. We are always willing to reverse ourselves when an error is made, as we did in these circumstances." However, the issue underscores the risk online merchants face when they tie their product listings to their Google ads. When Google flags a retailer's product as counterfeit, it automatically shuts off that retailer's ads across all Google's platforms, including YouTube, search, display, and shopping ads. Both agency execs said Google ads drive a significant amount of web traffic and sales for retailers.
A spokesperson for Google said that its policy center and review systems work across all ad products — not just Performance Max.
