How Google uses AI to take the hard work out of taking selfies:

A core feature of Clips was its focus on determining not just the content of an image but what makes a personal photo interesting. Now Photobooth uses similar techniques to detect important moments such as when everyone in a group shot is looking at the camera, but also to identify kisses as important even when the participants aren’t looking at the lens.

While waiting for the perfect moment, Photobooth is constantly assigning a score to the image currently being captured based on a variety of factors. This score is translated into a horizontal bar at the top of the screen which grows wider as the score increases, helping participants to focus attention on the camera and improve their facial expressions and poses.

While Photobooth is undoubtedly an impressive tool, I have to wonder whether such high levels of automation help or hinder the creation of individual, personal photos. If we’re all playing up to the same AI scoring system, might our photos start to fit Google’s interpretation of a good image rather than our own?

I think in the case of selfies, and group selfies in-particular, a certain degree of automated help is more than welcome. Group photos are difficult enough to take at the best of times. Throw in the added difficulty of coordinating the group with your voice while maintaining a good pose and simultaneously operating the camera at arm’s length, and it’s easy to see why group selfies often need several attempts to get right. Hopefully, Photobooth will reduce that number significantly.
