Google is scaling back its diversity hiring targets, following a trend among US companies that have reduced or eliminated DEI programs. This move comes after a presidential executive order targeting DEI initiatives among federal contractors.
Google is revising its diversity hiring targets, joining a growing number of US companies that have scaled back or abandoned diversity, equity, and inclusion ( DEI ) programs. This decision follows a presidential executive order aimed at discouraging government contractors from pursuing DEI initiatives.
As a federal contractor, Google, which sells technology and services to the government, including its significant cloud division, has been evaluating changes required in light of recent court decisions and executive orders related to DEI. Google's parent company, Alphabet, also reflected this shift in its annual 10-K report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The report removed a previous statement affirming its commitment to DEI and creating a workforce representative of its user base. Google maintains its commitment to providing equal opportunities for all employees and acknowledges reviewing its DEI programs over the past year. They state that the updated 10-K language reflects this shift and that they are evaluating changes required as a federal contractor. This move comes shortly after Google CEO Sundar Pichai and other prominent tech executives, including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, and Mark Zuckerberg, supported President Trump during his inauguration. Notably, Meta (formerly Facebook) discontinued its DEI program last month, while Amazon halted some of its programs in December following Trump's election. Numerous companies outside the tech sector have also distanced themselves from DEI. These include Walt Disney Co., McDonald's, Ford, Walmart, Target, Lowe's, and John Deere. President Trump's executive order threatens financial penalties against federal contractors with 'illegal' DEI programs. Companies found in violation could face substantial damages under the 1863 False Claims Act, which holds contractors liable for three times the government's damages for making false claims. The order also directs federal agencies to investigate publicly traded companies, large non-profits, and institutions with DEI policies deemed to constitute 'illegal discrimination or preference.' Determining which DEI policies the Trump administration considers 'illegal' presents a significant challenge for companies. The executive order aims to eliminate discriminatory and illegal preferences, mandates, policies, programs, and activities within the federal government and compel agencies to combat illegal private-sector DEI practices
