Nobody outside Google seems to have seen this coming: a new update from Google means that Apple’ AirDrop will work between iPhones and Android. But will Apple close it?
Google updated QuickShare, enabling iPhone users to easily share files with Android phones, similar to AirDrop. This independent development, starting with Pixel 10 , prioritizes security. The article questions if Apple will allow this interoperability, given its history of blocking third-party attempts like Beeper, as Google developed it without Apple 's cooperation.
Google announced an update to its QuickShare feature and it’s one that hadn’t been predicted. Google has found a way for iPhone users to share files to Android phones as simply as AirDrop. But will Apple shut it down?AirDrop, as you’ll know, is the breathtakingly easy way to share files between iPhone, iPad and Mac. It works seamlessly and fast. But it’s for Apple devices only. Google has now developed a way for Android to get in on the action., Google explained this is designed to work for iPhone users with Android as well, starting with the Pixel 10 series. “We built this with security at its core, protecting your data with strong safeguards that were tested by independent security experts. It’s just one more way we’re bringing better compatibility that people are asking for between operating systems, following our work on RCS and unknown tracker alerts. We’re looking forward to improving the experience and expanding it to more Android devices,” Google explained. There’s no mention of working with Apple to achieve this, and Google went on to make a statement to“We accomplished this through our own implementation. Our implementation was thoroughly vetted by our own privacy and security teams, and we also engaged a third party security firm to pen-test the solution,” Google said. Which begs the question: what will Apple make of this? There have been previous attempts to create interoperability between Apple and Android devices and they haven’t gone down well at Cupertino. Apple guards user privacy and security with a passion. Beeper was one attempt to make iMessage an Android feature and it was shut down in a matter of hours. Google isn’t Beeper, of course and given recent attempts by various governments to open up Apple’s systems, it may be that the iPhone maker is fine with this move. No, I don’t think that’s likely either as surely it would have been announced by both parties if they were happy with it. More on this story as it develops.
