Google Maps will soon display 'Gulf of America' and 'Mount McKinley' in the United States, following President Trump's executive order. The update will occur once the U.S. Board on Geographic Names finalizes the changes. While Google Maps users in the U.S. will see these new names, users in other countries may see both the old and new names.

Google Maps users in the United States will soon see the names 'Gulf of America' and 'Mount McKinley' on the navigation app, following President Donald Trump 's executive order to rename them. Google stated on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday that it will update the app to reflect these new names once they are finalized by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, the government body responsible for standardizing place names.

\The company emphasized its long-standing practice of implementing name changes when they are officially updated in government sources. When names differ between countries, Google Maps adheres to its policy of displaying users the official local name. Consequently, users in the United States will see 'Gulf of America,' while users in Mexico will see 'Gulf of Mexico.' Users outside of these countries will be shown both names.\ Competitor Apple Maps has yet to publicly comment on the renaming, even after facing criticism from a Texas congressman. U.S. Representative Dan Crenshaw, a Republican from Houston, called out the company on social media last week for displaying 'Gulf of Mexico' on its map app. President Trump first expressed his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America' during an interview before his inauguration, stating that the new name 'has a beautiful ring.' The executive order issued on January 20, titled 'Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,' instructs the Secretary of the Interior to direct the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to enact these name changes within the next 30 days. The U.S. Department of the Interior announced on Friday that it is 'working expeditiously' on updating the names.
