Google Maps will update its listings to reflect the 'Gulf of America' and 'Mount McKinley' names once the U.S. government officially changes its documentation. The move follows President Trump's proclamation declaring February 9th as 'Gulf of America Day' and his order to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali. Google Maps will only make changes when the government updates its official listings for these geographic features.
Google Maps has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The change came a day after President Donald Trump signed a proclamation declaring February 9th as "Gulf of America Day" and days Trump ordered that the water bordered by the Southern United States, Mexico and Cuba be renamed to the Gulf of America. He also ordered America’s highest mountain peak be changed back to Mt. McKinley.
The International Hydrographic Organization — of which both the United States and Mexico are members — works to ensure all the world’s seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and charted uniformly, and also names some of them. There are instances where countries refer to the same body of water or landmark by different names in their own documentation.
