Google denies millions of Gmail accounts are suddenly at risk — what to know.

For the second time in just a few weeks, Google has issued an update to publicly deny that a “security breach” has impacted millions of Gmail users. The reports are false, the company says, “Gmail’s defenses are strong, and users remain protected.

” In September, Google told me that multiple reports had “incorrectly claimed we issued a broad warning to all Gmail users about a major Gmail security issue. This is entirely false.” At the time, Google’s) stem from details of an infostealer haul of millions of passwords, some of which inevitably are Gmail credentials. The irony is that this shouldn’t be news. If Gmail users adopted passkeys and two-step verification, as Google advises, then these infostealer hauls would be valueless and accounts would remain protected. Google is concerned that such reports lead to unnecessary alarm across its user base. And there’s definitely something in that. But there is some good from the publicity that these reports generate — increasing awareness that users need to shore up the security on their accounts, adding additional verification methods and ideally passkeys.Google says as much again now, appending this advice to its denial. “Users can protect themselves from credential theft by turning on 2-step verification and adopting passkeys as a stronger and safer alternative to passwords.” The company also advises users to “reset passwords when they are found in large batches like this.” That’s also good advice, but again it should be unnecessary. If you have 2SV on your account and a passkey, a leaked or stolen password can’t be used to access your account. You should— need to add passkeys to their accounts. We must be fast approaching a time where these security methods become mandatory and accounts cannot be accessed with leaked credentials. Until that happens, the fear is these stories will continue to breakagain this month that the use of 2SV reduces a user’s risk of an account breach by more than 99%. That stat has been the same since 2019, which suggests a different approach is now needed to change password behaviors.
