For Pixel users, who are as close to the Android mothership as can be, the process is usually smoother than for the likes of Samsung,
But this month, Pixel users have been given a much more serious update warning than others, with two high severity threats which Google warns “may be under limited, targeted exploitation” in other words, download and install the update now.According to GrapheneOS which found and reported the vulnerabilities, they are “being actively exploited in the wild by forensic companies,” AKA spyware vendors.
And so we’ve come full circle with these Pixel patches—which were clearly being addressed when TAG’s “Buying Spying” report was released. Pixel users should go to Settings—Security & Privacy—System & Updates to find and install the update, if that hasn’t already been done. Either way, be sure to check your firmware is up-to-date and then restart your device to make sure all updates have been applied.
While updating asap is the right advice for all, some users are more vulnerable than others, especially given the highly targeted nature of any exploitation here. “Spyware is typically used to monitor and collect data from high-risk users like journalists, human rights defenders, dissidents and opposition party politicians,” TAG says.
