Gemini for Home is rolling out: Get early access to the new AI assistant replacing Google Assistant.
Originally announced back in August, after being teased at I/O in May, Gemini for Home is the final nail in the Google Assistant’s smart home coffin, replacing the digital assistant across devices like smart speakers and displays, including the new Google Home Speaker.
The $99 smart speaker is the first audio device designed specifically for Gemini, which is due out in spring 2026. With Gemini for Home, you still start commands with the classic “OK/Hey Google,” prompt, Google states that interactions will feel “fundamentally new.” So, instead of strict, very clear, commands, Gemini will be able to handle nuanced requests, reasoning its way through trickier tasks. For example, if you ask Gemini to “turn off the lights everywhere except the living room,” or to “play that Cyndi Lauper song fromGemini for Home also acts as a household organizer, with things like shopping lists, calendar events and kitchen timers all getting smarter. You can tell Gemini to “add the ingredients for an authentic paella” to your shopping list, “set a timer for a soft hard boiled egg” or even ask when the best time is to visit a certain tourist spot is and it will provide much more useful assistance.To get involved in the Gemini for Home action, you go to your Google Groups settings and choose the "Global Settings" option. Within these settings, make sure the box for "Add me to their groups" is checked. Inside the Google Home app, tap on your profile picture and then select “Home settings,” and then check the "early access" option. Once your access is granted and you join the program, Gemini for Home will replace Google Assistant on all your devices that it is compatible with., including revamped Nest Cams and Doorbells.
