I've been writing about technology for most of my adult life, focusing mainly on legal and regulatory issues. I write for a wide range of publications: credits include the Times, Daily Telegraph and Financial Times newspapers, as well as BBC radio and numerous technology titles.

A British academic is leading a class-action lawsuit against Google on behalf of UK app developers, claiming it's abused its dominant position.

The lawsuit before the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal is looking for up to £1.04 billion in damages for thousands of Android app developers. This, it says, is compensation for the losses in revenues suffered by these individuals and businesses, many of whom are SMEs, from August 2018 onwards. "It is extremely important that the principles of fairness and equality of opportunity underlie our rapidly expanding digital economy by ensuring effective redress for those harmed by any abusive anti-competitive behaviorr in the marketplace. I am bringing this claim because I believe that big tech businesses like Google should not be allowed to run roughshod over small businesses," Professor Rodger said.

Meanwhile, the company is currently facing eight other competition cases in the U.K., including one from shopping ad management platform Connexity UK, again over alleged abuse of its dominant position.
