Google DeepMind's AI systems, AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2, have achieved a silver medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The problems were first translated into formal mathematical language for the AI model to process, a step not required of human contestants.

Notably, the AI achieved a perfect score on the competition’s most challenging problem, which only five human contestants solved. The remarkable achievement places DeepMind’s AI among the top young mathematical minds in the world. “There have been some legendary examples of proofs that are longer than Wikipedia. This was not that: we’re talking about a very short, human-style output,”excelled in some areas, it struggled in others. For two of the six questions, the systems were unable to make any headway. Besides, Google’s AIFor reference, while human competitors are given a nine-hour time limit, DeepMind’s AI took three days to solve one particularly difficult problem.
