Google Contacts is set to enhance its video calling capabilities with a new feature that lets users set a default app for video calls, streamlining the process.
Google Contacts is reportedly working on making video calls even easier, especially through connected apps like WhatsApp. Currently, tapping the video call button on a contact's details page initiates a carrier-driven video call. You can also see connected apps like WhatsApp, but need to click an expand button to send a message, audio call, or video call through those apps.
In a future update, long-pressing the video call button will allow you to set a default app for video calls, choosing between a carrier-driven call or a WhatsApp call. This means your next video call will be initiated using your preferred app. When a contact has multiple numbers, long-pressing the video call button will show a list of available calling options. If a contact isn't on your preferred app, Google Contacts will display a network bar icon to indicate a carrier-driven video call
