The team overcame food poisoning to clinch its spot in the D-III College Baseball World Series.
Birmingham-Southern baseball players Charlie Horne, left, and Mitch Austin receive fluids from IVs on Saturday during Birmingham-Southern's super regional victory against Denison University. Horne, a relief pitcher, got the save to clinch a spot in the D-III College Baseball World Series. The story of the Birmingham-Southern baseball team just keeps getting better, or, depending on the most appropriate perspective, at least more compelling and unbelievable.
The entire bullpen had food poisoning and so did starting third baseball Mitch Austin. Closer Hanson McCown of Oak Mountain High School went to the emergency room. Relievers Jacob Fields and Charlie Horne were hooked up to IVs to begin the game. Fields still had the bandage to the IV on his arm when he went in to pitch the seventh inning.
Fields got the job done, though. The spirit of this team is legendary. The school might be closing, but this baseball story will live forever. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the team pay for its trip to the World Series,. The inspiring story of Birmingham-Southern baseball is now gaining major national attention and documentary crew began tagging along for the ride following the team’s unlikely victory in the regional round of the national tournament.
