A woman driving a black Nissan Pathfinder SUV along Swift Street crossed West Cliff Drive and went over the bluff into Monterey Bay on Monday morning.

Santa Cruz Fire Department rescue swimmer Jake Inman checks the Nissan Pathfinder that drove into the ocean off West Cliff on Monday for occupants before shouting the “All Clear” once confirmed that no one was inside the vehicle. SANTA CRUZ —

The Nissan Pathfinder tumbled in the surf near Swift Street after it was driven off West Cliff into the Pacific on Monday. The driver, who initially crashed into a Honda sedan traveling east on West Cliff Drive before 11:30 a.m., was transported for medical care, according to Santa Cruz Police Department spokesperson Katie Lee. The driver of the sedan, who said she had come to a stop at the intersection and then drove forward before the SUV driver struck her front end, remained at the scene and was not transported for medical care.

Lewin and her friend immediately turned back to see if they could assist those involved with the initial crash when they said they saw the SUV backing up and driving forward. The SUV flipped twice before landing on its roof along the shoreline, she said. The driver emerged from the SUV and began swimming out into the bay, Lewin said.
