Aziraphale looking confused in Good Omens season 3

Warning: spoilers for Good Omens season 3. Following the show’s thematic tradition, the final season of Good Omens covers a religious conflict or event, and this time it's the Second Coming, but with a couple of changes.

After the ending of Good Omens season 2 saw Crowley staying on Earth and Aziraphale returning to Heaven, season 3 catches up with them a couple of years later. In the present day, Crowley lives in an alley and spends his time gambling and drinking, while Aziraphale has been working in Heaven.

Heaven’s next big event is the Second Coming, which was revealed by the Metatron when Aziraphale accepted the job at the end of season 2. Aziraphale has been hard at work planning the Second Coming, but it is complicated when Jesus escapes from Heaven. On top of that, the Book of Life is stolen from Heaven, and the archangels begin to mysteriously disappear, and so Crowley and Aziraphale team up one more time to find it.

Crowley and Aziraphale find out that the stealing of the Book of Life and the Second Coming are connected, and because of that, the universe is heading towards a catastrophic and definitive end. As this is Good Omens, the Second Coming doesn’t go exactly as described in the Bible, but it still keeps its essence, though in the show’s unique style.

The Biblical Second Coming Explained In Christian belief, the Second Coming is the belief that Jesus Christ will return to Earth after his ascension to Heaven. It says that Jesus will return in glory to fulfill messianic prophecies, judge the living and the dead, and establish the kingdom of God. Unlike Jesus’ birth, his return will be witnessed by everyone, and in Islam, the Second Coming is one of the major signs of Judgment Day.

It’s important to note that different religions and branches within these have different interpretations of what the Second Coming is and its purpose. The exact time when the Second Coming will begin is unknown, though some religions believe there are warning signs , but believers are generally encouraged to be ready for it at all times.

Contrary to popular belief, the Second Coming isn’t the end of humanity, but the end of the current age and the creation of a new Heaven and Earth. There’s confusion between the Second Coming and the Rapture, but they are two different events. The Rapture is all about Jesus returning for his believers and saving them, while the Second Coming is Jesus’ arrival on Earth to defeat evil and establish a new kingdom.

Why Aziraphale Wanted To Change The Second Coming When the Metatron mentioned at the end of Good Omens season 2 that they were about to prepare the Second Coming, Aziraphale was shocked. This was the first sign of the angel not being entirely on board with the concept Heaven had for the Second Coming, but luckily, he was given a higher position in Heaven that granted him some power over decisions and plans, such as the return of Jesus.

However, what Aziraphale wants is to give a positive twist to the Second Coming. Rather than it being an event that marks the end of everything they had come to know, Aziraphale wants it to be a “happy” event, and even worked with the archangels to work out the logistics of Jesus’ sudden appearance on a plane and his arrival at the United Nations to deliver his message to the entire world.

Ultimately, Jesus escapes Heaven, prompting Aziraphale, the archangels, and the demons to go after him, while Jesus explores the street where Aziraphale’s bookshop used to be. Jesus does deliver his message of love, hope, and forgiveness, but only to those on the street who are willing to listen . That definitely doesn’t go as Aziraphale planned, but neither does the rest of the Second Coming.

Michael’s Plan For The Second Coming Explained Archangel Michael turns out to be a very traditional archangel, but they take things too far. Even though Michael worked with Aziraphale on the planning of the Second Coming and even worked out the logistics of Jesus’ arrival on Earth, they had completely different plans, and for them, they needed the Book of Life.

It’s Michael who steals the Book of Life and starts erasing entities from it, beginning with the Metatron. When confronted at the center of the universe by Crowley and Aziraphale, Michael explained that the Second Coming had to happen as planned and not as Aziraphale wanted it, and felt they were the only one who could do so with the help of the Book of Life.

Although Aziraphale comes very close to convincing Michael to stop, the archangel maintains their decision and burns the rest of the Book of Life on the Eternal Flame. Crowley saves the page about the bookshop, and he and Aziraphale travel there, as it’s now the only remaining place in the universe, and they are the only survivors . Does The Second Coming Actually Happen in Good Omens Season 3?

The Second Coming doesn’t happen in Good Omens season 3 like the biblical version, nor as Aziraphale and Michael wanted, but it ultimately does happen. Jesus does deliver his message, but not to the entire world, and in a way, he fulfills his new mission on Earth, though on a smaller scale. Jesus doesn’t establish a new kingdom, and that’s because he’s destroyed by Michael and the burning of the Book of Life.

The end of the current age does happen in Good Omens season 3, but that means the destruction of the entire universe. Aziraphale and Crowley manage to convince God to create a new universe with no good and evil, Heaven and Hell, angels and demons, instead just letting humans be humans and letting them and Earth continue their course as they should. God grants them this, even though that means Aziraphale and Crowley also cease to exist.

However, human versions of them exist in the new universe, where they meet, fall in love, and have a long-lasting, loving relationship.

Ultimately, the Second Coming was necessary for Crowley and Aziraphale to have their happy ending in Good Omens, even if they weren’t the original versions of the characters. 24 8.6/10 Good Omens 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Comedy Drama Action Fantasy Release Date 2019 - 2026-00-00 Network Prime Video Showrunner Neil Gaiman, Douglas Mackinnon Directors Rachel Talalay, Douglas Mackinnon Writers Neil Gaiman, John Finnemore, Andy Nyman, Cat Clarke, Jeremy Dyson 10 Images Close Cast See All Creator Neil Gaiman Powered by Expand Collapse
