The lead duo reflect on the Good Omens finale.
Warning: This article contains major SPOILERS for Good Omens season 3. Perfectly matched co-stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen have shared their thoughts on the heartrending conclusion to Good Omens.
Prime Video is ending its fantasy series based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's novel with season 3, which comprises a single, 90-minute episode. Aziraphale and Crowley contend with the Second Coming and decide to sacrifice themselves for a better universe, and the stars commented on this choice in a new bonus feature.
"Aziraphale and Crowley choose annihilation for the good of humanity," says Sheen. "They want human beings to be free and to have freedom of choice — but it means they have to disappear. They ultimately choose what they believe is right for humanity over their own happiness. Unbeknownst to them, life finds a way.
" Sheen says this because, after God gives Aziraphale and Crowley the chance to decide humanity's future — and they choose to create a new universe with no Heaven or Hell — the audience sees that new, human versions of them find each other again billions of years later, fall in love, and have a happy marriage. "It's almost quite philosophical," says Tennant.
"In some ways, it's quite unlike anything that's gone before, and yet it seems the only way this story could end — with something of a meditation on what it is to be a human, really. something that I will be proud of and will live with me forever. " Sheen added:"It's incredibly bittersweet to get to the end of it.
" Good Omens explores themes of free will and simple happiness, through Aziraphale and Crowley regularly fighting Heaven and Hell's plans to end the world because of all the things they have come to love about humanity, making the series' ending fitting. Though the original Aziraphale and Crowley are no more, Anthony Crowley and Asa Fell are content regardless of whether there is a higher power out there. This also effectively wraps up the central arc of their romance.
