Tom Hanks, Hollywood icon and everyman, delivered a rousing—and name-dropping—speech while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille award at the GoldenGlobes
Charlize Theron. At the top of his speech, Hanks made sure to acknowledge, his wife of 31 years, and his five children, all of whom were at his table during the ceremony, causing him to instantly tear up. The next time he choked up, he blamed it on his raging cold, joking that he had spent the last few days “drinking a lot of savagely orange drinks.”
The movie star also paid tribute to past directors he worked with, like the late Nora Ephron and Penny Marshall, bringing the room to a standing ovation when all was said and done. “I have never not been challenged or flummoxed or lost sleep because of the work that was asked of me,” Hanks added. He ended his speech by referencing the old Hollywood terminology of directors not being able to wrap a shot until the “gate“ was good, referring to movies shot on film.
