The Golden Gate Bridge suicide net, completed in 2023, is proving effective in reducing suicides. Since its installation, the number of deaths has dropped significantly from an average of 30 per year to 14 in 2023. Intervention attempts have also decreased, with 132 successful interventions in 2024.

The Golden Gate Bridge suicide net appears to be working and is doing what it's intended to do – reduce the number of deaths at the bridge. According to Golden Gate Bridge officials, over the past 20 years there have been on average 30 suicides a year on the bridge. Since the one-and-three-quarter mile safety net was constructed, that number has fallen to 14 and last year there were eight. The number of attempts is also down. In a typical year, there are around 200 attempts.

The net, a life-saving project, cost $224 million to complete. Construction began in 2018 and was completed about one year ago. Last summer, we reported the net was showing signs of working even while it was under construction when the safety net more than halved the number of suicides. At the time, bridge officials said the net is a deterrent but that people still wind up in the net, in which case first responders come to their aid.
