Nine current or former patients of Nationwide Children’s Hospital are getting a VIP experience at the Memorial Tournament through the Golden Cubs program, which recognizes children for their strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
One of those honorees is Braylee Epperson, who was diagnosed with a malignant mixed germ cell ovarian tumor, a rare, aggressive type of cancer that is a combination of two or more types of germ cell tumors after going to the hospital with stomach pains when she was 11. Braylee went through multiple rounds of chemotherapy and treatment and is now healthy at 14 years old.
She is in remission and has returned to typical teenage activities, including dance recitals and spending time with friends. She also had the chance to meet one of her favorite actors, Chris Pratt, through the Golden Cubs program. Braylee is the 2026 Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award winner, recognized for the strength and positivity she showed while facing her health challenge. She hopes her story will inspire others to keep fighting.
"This part of your life is a tunnel. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. You can't just have a tunnel and it just stops. You're going to make it and you're going to be great and come out more mature, with more wisdom, and have a better life," she said.
