Whereas Godzilla vs. Kong was centered on the conflict between the two titular Titans, its sequel is being heavily marketed as a team-up. However, that's not to say the two will be on the same side for the entirety of the movie. The fighting between the two ancestral rivals concluded with Godzilla gaining a decisive victory over Kong. Presumably on account of their reluctant alliance against the Monsterverse's Mechagodzilla, Godzilla and Kong parted ways amicably. Godzilla vs. Kong's ending insinuated that their rivalry had been resolved, but hardly ruled out a continuation of their battle. Thanks to the second trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it's now been confirmed that Godzilla and Kong will be at odds at least more time when they return to the big screen. Godzilla Attacking Kong In Egypt Proves Their Rivalry Isn't Over A clip in the trailer shows Godzilla unleashing a blast of pink atomic breath at a fleeing Kong, taking out part of a pyramid in the process. The scene doesn't reveal the extent of the fight or how it will go, but it does confirm that Godzilla will go on the offensive against Kong sometime after his transformation. This goes to show that while Godzilla and Kong elected against renewing their fight after the destruction of Mechagodzilla, they're still bitter rivals. Most likely, neither has forgotten nor forgiven what they did to each other in Godzilla vs. Kong. This aspect of their dynamic helps explain why Godzilla would attack Kong. While it's true that he let Kong go at the end of their last movie together, it's important to note that Kong had just saved him from Mechagodzilla. That may have earned Kong a reprieve, but nothing more. Not only that, but as evidenced by his loss to Mechagodzilla, Godzilla was fatigued. A lack of energy may have contributed to his decision to walk away from a potential fourth fight with Kong. Another factor to take into consideration is the territorial nature of the monsters, Godzilla in particular. Godzilla cemented his status as the alpha of the Titans in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, effectively making him the apex predator of the entire ecosystem. As for Kong, it was suggested at the end of Godzilla vs. Kong that he would become the alpha of the Hollow Earth world, giving him his own place to rule. With that in mind, Godzilla may see Kong's return to the surface as an invasion of his territory. In Godzilla's mind, the entire surface world may belong to him. Why Godzilla & Kong's Rematch May Be Different From Their Previous Fights Although Godzilla and Kong's fights have already received considerable focus in the Monsterverse, their upcoming rematch stands to offer something new. After all, both Godzilla and Kong are sporting upgrades. For now, it's hard to say if Godzilla's new transformation simply makes him stronger or gives him additional abilities as well, but Kong, for his part, should have a different approach this time around. In the Egypt scenes, Kong is wearing an armored gauntlet called the B.E.A.S.T. Glove. Apparently, it boasts some sort of energy-based powers. Having the Beast G.L.O.V.E. - and not the Godzilla-powered axe from Godzilla vs. Kong - should change Kong's fighting style just enough to make their next fight an unfamiliar challenge for both Titans. Whether it'll have an impact on the end result, though, is another matter. Any advantage Kong gets from his new weapon is likely to be canceled out by Godzilla's own power-up, hence why Kong should once again be regarded as the underdog when they meet again in Egypt. Godzilla & Kong's Rematch Will Most Likely Be The Beginning Of Their Team-Up Close Judging by the stakes and the promise of a team-up against the Monsterverse's Skar King in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Godzilla and Kong's rematch in Egypt should be a short-lived one. It could be that this fight is what sets up the two joining forces. In the trailer, Kong is shown evading Godzilla's atomic breath, rather than attacking. This could be a defensive measure, similar to his attempts to avoid Godzilla's atomic breath in Hong Kong, or a sign that it's not Kong's intention to fight. It may be that Kong wants Godzilla's help, but will have to endure another fight - and possibly another loss - to get it. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire After nearly destroying each other in 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong, the giant Titans are back to face a new dangerous threat, but this time, they are on the same side. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the fifth film in Warner Bros.' growing Monsterverse franchise and will be directed by Adam Wingard.
