The latest era of Godzilla has been returning the world's most iconic movie monster to his horror roots, and that's being taken even farther with a new comic depicting Godzilla's first assault on humanity.
As revealed by horror fan-site Bloody Disgusting, IDW's appropriately titled The Horror of Godzilla is coming from the creative minds of Ethan S. Parker, Griffin Sheridan, and Tristan Jones. The series takes Godzilla back to his roots, 1954 Japan, and will depict the legendary Kaiju in all his terrible glory.Godzilla Has Never Been More Horrific Already in the three panels revealed for The Horror of Godzilla, it's clear that Jones is more than up to the task of making Godzilla truly monstrous. The use of black and white, obviously evocative of Godzilla's first appearance, combined with the great lighting, adds an eerie and ominous layer to the creature. Assisting this feeling is the angle of the panels. Godzilla is being viewed exclusively from low angles looking up, really selling his size and putting readers in the shoes of the terrified people Godzilla is threatening to kill. The design of Godzilla also ranks among the Kaiju's best. The two pinpricks of light representing his eyes are just such a small but cool detail that really makes this version of Godzilla come alive. Luckily for fans, The Horror of Godzilla isn't the only recent depiction of the character that goes big on horror. Godzilla Is Finally Reclaiming His Title As a True Horror Icon After decades spent being depicted as a protector of humanity, Godzilla's last few projects have finally returned the giant lizard to his horrific origins. 2016's critically acclaimed Shin Godzilla made the monster a physical manifestation of the numerous nuclear disasters that have afflicted Japan. This Godzilla's flesh was crackling and decaying with radioactivity, making the creature truly horrific. Meanwhile, 2023's Godzilla Minus One took the title kaiju back to just after World War II. Here, Godzilla represented the guilt and social turmoil Japan experienced in the wake of the Second World War. Minus One would go on to win an Oscar, becoming the franchise's first film to do so. With The Horror of Godzilla, that legacy of terror continues. While the Monsterverse's depiction of Godzilla is cool and has its fans for good reasons, there is a hunger to see him depicted as a true monster. All signs point to The Horror of Godzilla delivering on the Kaiju's true terrifying potential.
