The Johnny Depp-directed Modigliani biopic casts its leads, which include a Godfather star who will reunite with Depp after working with him in 2011.

The Johnny Depp-directed biopic Modi has announced its first trio of cast members. The upcoming film, which marks Depp's first time in the director's chair for a feature film since 1997's The Brave. Based on a play by Dennis McIntyre, it will take place in Paris in 1916 and follow the life of renowned Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani.

Per Deadline, Modi has now officially cast Riccardo Scamarcio in the title role along with Pierre Niney as Modigliani's French contemporary Maurice Utrillo and Al Pacino as art collector Gangnat. This will mark Pacino's first collaboration with Depp since they both appeared in the 2011 Adam Sandler movie Jack and Jill. That film followed their first-ever collaboration, 1997's Donnie Brasco, by a whopping 14 years, making this over-a-decade gap a common occurrence for the two stars.

Some of his most notable works include The Godfather, Scent of a Woman , and the recent Ridley Scott biopic House of Gucci. However, his co-stars in this new film aren't quite as well known in the U.S.

While Scamarcio has held more than 75 credits, they have largely been in Italian productions. However, he joined the John Wick franchise as Santino D'Antonio in 2017's John Wick: Chapter 2, a role he later reprised in that film's sequel. He will also be appearing in the upcoming Hercule Poirot murder mystery A Haunting in Venice, which sees director Kenneth Branagh returning to the role for the third time since 2017's Murder on the Orient Express.

Niney is also better known in his home country of France. Before joining the cast of Modi, his most prominent roles have been in French outings including A Perfect Man and Black Box. He also has previous experience with biopic filmmaking, as he played the title role in 2014's Yves Saint Laurent.
