A herd of goats has returned to Austin's Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, munching on unwanted vegetation as part of an eco-friendly landscaping initiati

, which manages the popular urban path, has brought back the four-legged landscapers to clear overgrown areas, including patches of poison ivy. The goats will work for 3-4 weeks this summer in three locations around the trail."By controlling these plants, we increase park safety by decreasing wildfire risk and improving sightlines."The animals, contracted from Rent-a-Ruminant, offer several advantages over traditional landscaping methods.

While the goats are described as friendly, the public is advised not to pet them due to the potential transfer of poison ivy oils.to support the initiative. For $25 per month, trail enthusiasts can help fund the goats' return. A $250 donation includes a certificate with the name of the adopted goat. After the goats complete their work, conservancy staff and volunteers will mulch the cleared areas and replant with native species in the fall and winter.Stay Connected
