I founded ClariNet, the world's first internet based business, am Chairman Emeritus of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and a fellow of the Foresight Institute. My current passion is self-driving vehicles and robots.

General Motors’ Cruise robotaxi unit announced it will resume giving rides in part of metro Phoenix , though with a human safety driver behind the wheel able to take over if the driving system has a problem. Over they next few months they will expand the service to more of the Phoenix area.

The good news is tempered by trouble at Motional, which was created by Aptiv and Hyundai. Aptiv bowed out, and with reduced funding from Hyundai, Motional has laid off half their staff and delayed deployments by 2 years. The ride-hail program in Las Vegas has been wound down Reports suggest that the main autonomy development team at Motional has not been curtailed, and most of the layoffs come from operations teams that won’t be needed with the delays.

While Cruise did major budget cuts and layoffs after their shutdown of operations, it was clear that they definitely wanted to continue. Cutting from $2B to $1B is massive, but spending $1B is still massive, and not done if you’re not serious. It just means that, like the others, you’re no longer in the same hurry.
