The news was confirmed by her son, Anderson Cooper.
“Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms," Cooper said in a statement to CNN. "She was a painter, a writer, and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend. She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they'd tell you, she was the youngest person they knew, the coolest, and most modern."
Born in 1924, Vanderbilt entered the world as a child heiress. She was the daughter of railroad tycoon Reginald Vanderbilt and Gloria Morgan—her father was a great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, and passed away when Gloria was only 18 months old. Over the years, Vanderbilt wore many different hats as a tastemaker and businesswoman. In the 1950s, she began by appearing on various television and stage productions as an actress. Later, in the 1970s, she made forays into fashion, becoming one of the pioneers of the designer jean movement, launching her successful label, Gloria Vanderbilt Jeans. She eventually expanded into clothing, jewelry, perfume, shoes, and more.
Vanderbilt made headlines and caused a stir from a young age. In 1934, in the midst of a much-documented custody battle between her parents, tabloids called her “The Poor Little Rich Girl.” As an adult, she endured public scrutiny for her high-profile romantic interests—from Howard Hughes to Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, among many others—as well as her four marriages.
She also wrote many best-selling novels, including “It Seemed Important at the Time” and “The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son on Life, Love, and Loss.” In 1988, she faced tragedy when witnessed her 23-year-old son, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper, committed suicide by jumping from their Manhattan terrace. Her 1996 book, “A Mother’s Story,” was written about her experiences with coping with grief.
