Over the years, Gloria Molina fought forced sterilizations, a prison, and the Exide battery recycling plant. She also pushed for more hospital beds and made sure transit lines connected to the Eastside.

“If you become a class plaintiff as they did, and you lose a case, you might be liable for, you know, attorney's fees and court fees,” Hernández said. “Gloria had no hesitation.” As a Mexican American woman from a working-class community, Molina got it, Hernández said — and would continue to do so as a local leader.
