Traffic came to a standstill on Monday along the Glenn Highway in Anchorage, Alaska, following a vehicle collision with injuries. The outbound lanes were closed for several hours, causing significant traffic backups. Emergency vehicles faced challenges navigating the congested area, resorting to driving on the shoulders of the highway to reach the scene. The closure prompted authorities to divert all traffic onto Old Glenn Highway via Birchwood Loop. Icy conditions and fog contributed to the hazardous driving conditions.
ANCHORAGE , Alaska — Traffic came to a sudden halt for several hours on Monday along the Glenn Highway after a vehicle collision closed one side of the highway just past Chugiak.
At around 11:30 a.m. Anchorage Police Department sent out a traffic alert notifying travelers that the outbound lanes of the highway were closed due to a vehicle collision with injuries. Alaska’s News Source was on the scene and witnessed traffic backed up for several miles. In one instance, traffic was observed attempting to make way for a firetruck that was working to reach the scene.Other emergency vehicles opted to drive along the shoulders of the highway to bypass traffic. All vehicles traveling along the Glenn Highway were being guided onto Old Glenn Highway via Birchwood Loop.
While on the scene Alaska’s News Source observed icy conditions on the road and fog that impacted visibility in several areas.
