A driver in Glendale, Ohio, got stuck on train tracks during a winter storm. Officer David Gillen and Ross Wilmoth from Glendale Public Works helped the driver escape the dangerous situation just moments before a train arrived.

Cars stuck trying to escape the snow and slush was the story for people all across the Tri-State throughout this winter storm. For a driver in Glendale , it almost turned deadly when they got stuck on train tracks. Moments after the crossing arms started coming down, a train was barreling down the tracks. Officer David Gillen of the Glendale Police Department was on patrol Sunday night, navigating the rough winter weather.

'Most of the time, it’s driving around on patrol looking for disabled vehicles that have slid off the road,' Gillen said. Gillen, along with Ross Wilmoth from Glendale Public Works, encountered a car struggling to get up a hill. They tried getting the driver to take a different route when the car drove over the tracks. 'We kind of paused for a second to see if they could safely clear it when the gates started coming down and the bells and lights came on,' Wilmoth said. The train tracks in Glendale are part of a quiet zone, meaning trains do not sound their horns as they approach. The only warning came when the crossing arms began to lower. 'We didn’t have any time to look or do anything; we just needed to move the vehicle off the tracks,' Gillen said.'I followed him up to the tracks, and he got behind the car and started to push. I came up on the next push, and it took two or three pushes until it gained traction and was able to clear the tracks,' Wilmoth said.'I’m just glad that we had as good an outcome as we did and we’re not having a different kind of discussion today,' Gillen said. Officer Gillen said that if anyone finds themselves in a similar situation, especially without assistance, they should exit the vehicle and call 911 immediately
