Ryan Murphy reveals that the original script for the pilot episode of the hit Fox series Glee had teacher Will Schuester as a meth addict.

The pilot script for the Fox musical comedy-drama television show Glee originally featured a much darker plot line for Matthew Morrison's optimistic teacher and club leader with a passion for musical theater, Mr. Schuester. Glee aired for six seasons from 2009 to 2015 and followed the diverse members of the fictitious William McKinley High School's glee club called New Directions, most of whom are misfits dealing with the stresses of relationships and social issues.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Despite being off the air for seven years, Glee has maintained its cultural relevancy. From the uncanny parallels between the characters' storylines and their actors' real lives to widespread conspiracy theories to some of the show's more eccentric moments becoming fodder for viral Twitter jokes, Glee remains a part of the current zeitgeist. However, fans may be surprised to learn that the classic show could have looked very different.

"In Ian [Brennan]'s original script, [Glee] was a very dark comedy... Mr. Schue, I believe, was a crystal meth addict in Ian's script... It was very dark... It was like the NC-17 version of show choir with a weird protagonist who's unraveling." How Glee Could Have Been Different Murphy's admission of the original plan for Glee's Mr. Schuester contrasts with the buoyant Spanish teacher that fans of the show saw. With this depiction of Morrison's character in mind, Glee could have been a much darker show with more of a focus on personal traumas rather than the power of teamwork.

Ironically, although Murphy intended to make Mr. Schuster a likable and trustworthy protagonist, fans still have mixed feelings about him. Those who have reexamined the character in recent years point out that he is still somewhat problematic. Despite not facing addiction, Will's marital issues and tendency to become overly involved in his students' personal lives still make him a complicated and morally dubious lead character of Glee.
