Mohammed Rajak says it's a dangerous time to be a shopkeeper in Scotland and has backed calls for the Scottish Government to take action against a 'tsunami' of retail crime.
An east end shopkeeper who took a machete to his thigh after being attacked by a gang of youths has backed calls for emergency action on a "tsunami" of retail crime across Scotland.
The 52-year-old, who has run Buywell Day-Today convenience store for three decades, was slashed in the thigh with a machete after being attacked by a gang of youths when he was in his 20s. He says it's a dangerous time to be a shopkeeper in Scotland, the Record reports. “In on incident staff confronted a shoplifter and he pulled out a machete. There is a feeling that police don’t have a grip on the situation. As a result petty crime has increased in my store.
“We have never experienced such a tirade of retail crime as we have now. The underlying problem is that the police aren’t doing enough and prosecutions are taking so long that organised crime is coming into convenience at a heavy pace. The SGF said no public body has been able to confirm how many convictions have been made. The federation has also received cross sector reports of shop theft doubling in recent months, compared to the same period in 2022.
“It is not only shop windows that are being shattered but people’s lives, their livelihoods, their health and their mental wellbeing.”A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “All workers deserve protection from abuse and violence and we encourage everyone to report crimes to Police Scotland. The Protection of Workers Act can be used when charging people who have assaulted or abused retail workers.
