A critical flaw that many “legacy sequels” face is not being able to differentiate themselves from their predecessors in a significant way. While it is often a good thing when a new generation of storytellers can take a different spin on established material, there is certainly a point at which being too reverential ends up becoming a detriment.
Gladiator II was able to avoid this issue entirely because Ridley Scott returned to direct the film, and was not interested in simply rehashing what he had already achieved with the original Gladiator. While the fight scenes and visuals are certainly more eye-popping, Gladiator II deals with the intricacies of the Roman political situation more successfully than the original film did. ✕ Remove Ads 'Gladiator II' Examines a Complex Political Situation Close Gladiator II makes the bold creative decision to essentially undo its predecessor's finale by confirming that nothing that had occurred in the first film actually changed the direction of the Roman Empire. While Maximus was able to defeat Commodus in the Colosseum, his dying wish to restore the chivalry of the Roman Republic was not honored. In the sixteen years that passed, the new Emperors Geta and Caracalla have decided to expand their domain by sending Marcus Acacius on an ambitious conquest of Africa. It is evident that a change of rulership is needed, as Acacius secretly conspires with Lucilla to take down the Emperors. However, the only way for Acacius to gain the support he needs to be hailed as a “hero” is through conquest, which leads to a massacre in Numidia, which inspires Lucius to seek vengeance. ✕ Remove Ads Lucius is placed in a position where he must honor both his father and grandfather. Like Maximus, he needs to win the support of the Roman people by participating in the violent, bloody spectacle of gladiatorial combat; by rising from nothing to become a leader, Lucius is the ultimate source of inspiration. However, Lucius also needs to retain the royal dynasty of his grandfather, Marcus Aurelius , who had wanted to preserve the “dream of Rome” before he was murdered by Commodus. Lucius is in a position where he can become the “people’s hero,” but that also makes him vulnerable to malicious figures who attempt to influence his behavior. The ruthless slave owner Marcinus is able to convince Lucius to fight on his behalf so that he can get revenge on Acacius for the death of his wife, Arishat . Unfortunately, every victory that Lucius claims in the arena means that Marcinus is able to hold more power of influence over the Emperors. ✕ Remove Ads Every Character in ‘Gladiator II’ Is Flawed The original Gladiator was a fairly straightforward hero’s journey about the importance of holding those in power responsible, but Gladiator II explores a murky sense of morality in which each of the characters are flawed. Although Lucilla idolizes her father and wants to resurrect his political ideologies, it is revealed that the former Emperor was not exactly the saint that he was remembered as being; Marcus Aurelius held slaves, including Macrinus, who swore to take back power by deceiving his way to the top. Macrinus’ rise to power suggests that while having a hereditary monarchy is never going to restore the glory of Rome, the rise of a populist aggressor is just as dangerous. By finding a way to manipulate the Emperors against each other, Macrinus is able to scheme himself into becoming the most powerful man in Rome. ✕ Remove Ads Gladiator II examines the necessity for personal growth, particularly when it comes to those who can shape the viewpoints of the body of citizens. While Lucius starts the film in a position of anger, he ends up realizing that continuing on a cycle of vengeance is only going to bring more destruction; it’s critical that after defeating Macrinus in battle, he calls for both warring factions to seek a peaceful solution.
