Expectations were high for Ridley Scott 's anticipated sequel, Gladiator II, and though the movie was well-loved by audiences, it struggled to meet one of Gladiator's most impressive accomplishments. In 2000, Gladiator became a surprising hit, earning $465 million at the box office and scoring a strong 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. The historical action film follows Russell Crowe as Maximus, a Roman general whose fall from grace forces him to become a gladiator, risking his life in the Colosseum.
At a time when the sword-and-sandal genre was fading away, Gladiator proved audiences still cared about Roman action. Fortunately, Gladiator II mostly lived up to viewers' expectations. In terms of box office earnings, Gladiator II grossed $419 million. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie earned a 71%. Although these numbers are a bit lower than those of Gladiator, they still prove that audiences were intrigued by the new movie and mostly impressed by its story. It is also important to note that Gladiator II raised the stakes of the franchise by having a star-studded cast and a massive budget. All in all, Gladiator II did the job of a good sequel: it brought the franchise back to life.
