Gladiator 2 is a direct sequel to Ridley Scott's Gladiator, but as its new main character suggests, it will be different from its predecessor in many ways. Inspired by Daniel P. Mannix's 1958 book Those About to Die, Ridley Scott's Gladiator features an ensemble cast with the year 180 AD in its backdrop. On its release, Gladiator became one of the highest-grossing films of the year 2000 by raking in $503 million worldwide.

While Russell Crowe's portrayal of Maximus Decimus Meridius and Joaquin Phoenix's performance as Commodus played a crucial role in selling Gladiator's revenge-fueled storyline, its primary appeal came from its underdog narrative.
Owing to Lucius' different upbringing from Maximus, Gladiator 2 cannot repeat the same underdog character beats for his narrative. Even if Lucius faces the same hardships as Russell Crowe's Maximus in Gladiator 2's beginning and loses everything, his storyline can still not replicate Maximus' because he comes from a place of more entitlement and freedom.
Gladiator 2's Completely Different Story Is A Good Thing While Gladiator 2 would still be an exciting prospect even if it adopted its predecessor's narrative structure, the fact that it has a completely different storyline makes it even better. By featuring Lucius as its lead character, Gladiator 2 assures that it will be distinct from the original and expand the first movie's Roman lore and historical references to new creative directions.
