The upcoming Gladiator II follows Lucius Verus , the son of Russell Crowe's original character Maximus, who takes on Macrinus as a gladiator mentor while aiding the fight to overthrow emperors Caracalla and Geta . The cast also includes Pedro Pascal and Connie Nielsen, reprising her original role as Lucilla. After an early screening of the movie ahead of its November release, attendees have been allowed to share their spoiler-free reactions to Gladiator II. The reactions are generally positive, though some have more mixed feelings about the feature. Drew Taylor compared Gladiator II to Top Gun: Maverick for"its ability to conjure the past while adding something new," also praising Ridley Scott's"large scale filmmaking excellence." Jillian called the movie"an absolute triumph," saying that"Ridley Scott places you in the action of the arena centered on legacy and honor amping up the blood, battles, and biceps for something so deliciously cinematic and Machiavellian," and praising Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal, and Joseph Quinn in particular. Some Find Gladiator II To Be More Shallow Germain Lussier said that the sequel"doesn’t quite rise to the greatness of the original," praising the stakes, story, and acting, but finding it to be"just slightly lacking emotionally." Tim Gerber called the movie"fun" and praised Paul Mescal, but said the movie"jumps from beat to beat without depth" and was somewhat disappointed in the way the"cinematography, music , characters" failed to live up to the original. Andrew J. Salazar similarly praised the acting, as well as Ridley Scott's direction, but agreed that"it's largely uneven & lacks the emotional punch of the first film." Denzel Washington Is A Major Standout Matthew Belloni somewhat facetiously said that"you’re not going to believe this but Denzel is great in GLADIATOR 2." Matt Brennan likewise singled out Denzel Washington, who is"relishing every. single. minute." Brennan also called Gladiator II"the 'we are so back' of bloody costume epics." More praise for Denzel Washington came from Rama's Screen, who called him"such an entertaining villain" and said"the arena games were imaginatively brutal!" What This Means For Gladiator II It Could Match The Reception Of The Original Overall, the social media reactions to the new movie have responded quite well to Ridley Scott's direction and nearly unanimously praised the Gladiator II cast. Even the more mixed reactions have found much to praise about the project, even if they found it to be lacking emotional depth as a theatrical experience. Of these posts, there were very few outright negative reactions to the movie, and certainly not to any standout element in particular.Overall, it seems possible that the sequel could garner a similar reception to the original Gladiator. While it remains to be seen how critics respond to the new movie in general, the 2000 title only earned a Certified Fresh 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Given the tenor of these early reactions, that number seems well within its grasp, though the 87% audience score may be slightly more difficult for it to match.
