He was a young boy of royal lineage, who stood as a co-ruler alongside his uncle, Commodus. However, there are several allusions that Maximus, the hero of the original movie, may be his father. This obviously complicates and adds further context to the harsh way that Maximus is treated, despite serving as a strong and tactical leader of the Roman Empire. It can often prove difficult for a movie to strike the right balance between humanizing immoral characters and glorifying their bad behavior.
