Ridley Scott's long-awaited Gladiator 2 adds to its already-loaded cast with an original Gladiator star and a Stranger Things breakout.
Gladiator 2 adds an original Gladiator star to the cast, alongside a Stranger Things breakout. Helmed by Ridley Scott, 2000’s Gladiator revived the sword-and-sandals genre, while boosting lead actor Russell Crowe to superstar status. Now over 20 years after the first movie dominated both the box office and awards season, Gladiator is finally getting a long-awaited sequel, with Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Barry Keoghan joining the cast.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Gladiator 2 cast was indeed already loaded enough, but now it’s receiving another infusion of talent, as Deadline reports that original Gladiator star Connie Nielsen is in talks to return, alongside Stranger Things breakout star Joseph Quinn. Nielsen of course is playing her OG Gladiator character Lucilla, while Quinn reportedly will play Emperor Caracalla.
What The New Casting News Says About Gladiator 2’s Story It should come as no surprise that Nielsen would be on-board to return for Gladiator 2, as the story is set to revolve around her son Lucius, played two decades on by Aftersun Oscar-nominee Mescal. It remains to be seen exactly what is happening with Lucilla in the sequel, but it’s safe to say such a shrewd and powerful woman will be right in the thick of whatever political machinations are taking place in the story.
Perhaps more intriguing from a story standpoint is the announcement of Quinn as Emperor Caracalla. The original Gladiator of course featured Joaquin Phoenix as the Emperor Commodus, the story’s conflicted antagonist. If Gladiator 2 means to follow the original movie’s rough story outline, it could well be that Caracalla is the villain, which sets Quinn up to give a broodingly evil performance a la Phoenix in the first movie.
It’s yet to be seen how these newly-announced Gladiator 2 stars will be deployed in the movie, but it’s already a certainty that the film will have amazing acting, given the heavyweight talent that has already been secured. With Scott taking up directorial reins on the film, it’s a safe bet that the drama will be heavy, both inside the gladiatorial arena and in the halls of power. Gladiator 2 is set for release on November 22, 2024.
