The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation CEO Sarah Kate Ellis blamed Elon Musk for what she alleges is an increase in anti-LGBT rhetoric on Twitter.
Ellis appeared on MSNBC on Saturday to clarify her comments that the social media platform is"the most dangerous platform for LGBTQ people." This came after GLAAD gave Twitter a Social Media Safety Index score of 33% in 2023, after it evaluated what it called an"alarming and steadily growing epidemic of anti-LGBTQ hate and disinformation" on Twitter.
"What is really sad here is that Twitter actually used to be the leader," Ellis said."We sat on their trust and safety council. But Elon Musk has turned Twitter into a weapon against the LGBTQ community. He leads the charge, literally leads the charge tweeting out anti-trans rhetoric and misinformation about the trans community and the LGBTQ community."
Ellis noted that the decrease in score was largely due to Twitter refusing to punish users for misgendering other users on its platform."I absolutely support trans," Musk clarified in a tweet before buying the platform,"but all these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare." Musk remains the CEO of Twitter until his replacement, Linda Yaccarino, takes over sometime this month but will remain in charge of software development and core principles afterward.
