Louise Clarke, an advanced clinical practitioner at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, has been a midwife for 22 years. She describes caring for mothers-to-be amidst a global health crisis.
Before the coronavirus crisis, I worked Monday to Friday, specialising in complex maternity care and working primarily with women with pre-existing cardiac or renal issues, or multiple pregnancies. Now, I’m doing more shifts to help out. People being off work because they’re isolating means I’m working more on the labour ward now than I would normally. It’s always nice to see one of your ladies there who you’ve looked after in antenatal care – and it means they get to see a friendly face, too.
Because of the risk of infection we are trying to reduce the footfall of women coming to the hospital. Those who were already on our caseload are still coming to clinics, and all women still have a face-to-face consultation when they reach 28 weeks, but a lot of appointments are now taking place over the phone, and we are asking mothers to come alone when they visit the hospital for scans. All in-person appointments are carried out with the necessary precautions in place.
I think there is still confusion out there around when it’s okay to come to hospital and when you should stay home. We ring our ladies a couple of days before any scheduled appointments to double check that they’re symptom-free. We have also got a Covid maternity email address now so women can get in touch with any questions or worries directly, and get an answer in a really timely fashion.
