Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani faces a trial in New York to determine if he can keep his Florida condominium and three World Series rings. The trial stems from a $148 million defamation judgment he owes to two Georgia election workers.
On Thursday, 80-year-old Rudy Giuliani faces trial in New York over whether he can keep his Palm Beach, Florida , condominium, which he claims he established as his permanent residence a year ago, and whether he must turn over three World Series rings he says he gave to his son in 2018. Judge Lewis J. Liman, presiding over the juryless trial in Manhattan federal court, is the same jurist who found Giuliani in contempt last Monday for repeating false claims about the 2020 presidential election.
Liman's contempt order has set Giuliani back in the upcoming trial, preventing him from offering testimony about texts or emails to prove he moved his residence to Florida since he failed to turn over any such materials. Liman also ruled that he can draw adverse inferences about gaps in evidence due to Giuliani's failure to provide materials, including rejecting any claims about Giuliani switching professional services to Florida-based providers after January 1, 2024. Giuliani has admitted to not turning over everything requested because he believed the requests were overly broad, inappropriate, or a trap. Giuliani's lawyers claim he is not hiding assets to avoid paying a defamation judgment to two Georgia election workers. The Florida property and World Series rings are the primary assets remaining in dispute from Giuliani's portfolio, estimated to exceed $10 million. He has already surrendered assets including a New York City apartment, a vintage Mercedes, and luxury watches. The Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea 'Shaye' Moss, won the defamation judgment after saying Giuliani's election fraud lies led to death threats and fear for their lives
