I'm the CEO of 20-first, a global 'balance' consultancy. I work with C-suite teams to achieve gender and generational balance by focusing on leadership, culture and systems. I facilitate politically incorrect debates that get leaders defining the strategic business opportunities of balance (and risks of not balancing).
Talk about flipping the script. While rape victims usually quietly struggle with the shame of what happened to them in the darkest reaches of their psyche, France ’s Gisèle Pelicot is almost single-handedly teaching us how to put the shame of rape where it belongs – on the perpetrators of often-invisible crimes.
Fifty men are now standing trial. They are all self-described ‘good guys,’ fathers and husbands now forced to watch videos of themselves abusing a sleeping older lady – in public. Firefighters, journalists, students, truck drivers, prison guards, nurses, retirees, city councillors. A picture of the banality of evil.
Gisele Pelicot is not your typical heroine figure. A slim, unassuming woman, wife, mother and grandmother, her wrinkles add an additional punctuation mark to an already tawdry tall tale. She was married for 50 years, to a man she seems to have loved. Her divorce went through the day the trial began. She couldn’t understand her recent health problems and pains, nor could her doctors. She thought she was suffering from early dementia.
