Officials from the Filipino population commission were at the Dr Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital to welcome Vinice into the world. Dr Romeo Bituin, chief of the hospital’s medical staff, said: ‘We just witnessed the world’s eight billionth baby in the Philippines.’ He said the mother went into labour at 11pm and the baby was born two hours later in a ‘normal spontaneous delivery’.In a statement, the UN said: ‘This unprecedented growth is due to the gradual increase in human lifespan owing to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine.It only took 12 years for the planet’s population to go from seven to eight billion people, but the UN believes it will reach nine billion by 2037 – in 15 years.
