But to lifelong residents of Gilroy like 21-year-old San Jose State University student Meilani Garnica, Sunday’s shooting is more than just a statistic, and Gilroy is more than just a dot on a map. She says she goes to the Garlic Festival every year, a. And every year, she gets the same combo plate — garlic scampi, pepper steak garlic sandwiches, garlic pasta, and garlic bread. But the most important part of the festival, she says, is seeing all of her old friends from school.
While Garnica had considered before what might happen if she were caught in a mass shooting, she had thought of the festival as a safe place. She couldn’t have imagined the shooter had grown up in the same town or walked at graduation alongside her friends. “It really puts things into perspective,” she said. “We need a change in our gun laws. The kid who did it purchased the gun in… We need to bring awareness to this horrible trend.
