Gilmore Girls secretly foreshadowed Rory's fate.
Although the ending of the Gilmore Girls revival might have seemed utterly unprecedented, one major Rory twist had its roots as far back as season 1 of the cult hit. Gilmore Girls ran from 2000 until 2007, with the show’s single-season revival arriving on Netflix in 2016. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was met with mixed reviews by both fans and critics, with many complaining that the follow-up failed to replicate the unique tone of the comedy-drama’s original run.
8 However, the bigger issue with the revival was a perceived shift in the characterization of the show’s titular heroines. Viewers and critics questioned whether Rory was always so self-centered and whether she and Lorelei always had a bad habit of fat-shaming the residents of Stars Hollow. Rory’s casual cheating and her lack of professional ambition both rubbed reviewers up the wrong way, jarring with the idealistic and often idealized protagonist of the original show.
A Year in the Life Revealed Rory Wrote A Book About Herself And Lorelei Rory’s Manuscript Effectively Retold The Story Of Gilmore Girls Close Rory tells her mother that all of her antics are simply “Fodder for the tell-all,” implying she will someday write a book about growing up with the impulsive, vivacious Lorelei as a mother. Although the line could be read as a sardonic joke, there is no reason to assume Rory is being entirely facetious.
When Lorelei’s Gilmore Girls backstory reveals that she was also a promising student before she became pregnant with Rory, this came as no surprise to viewers. Lorelei is as loquacious as her daughter, so it makes sense that Rory would harbor an ambition of becoming an author and bringing her mother to life on the page. Lorelei and Rory also have two distinctly dramatic, action-packed lives, so there is plenty of fodder for Rory’s potential tell-all book.
