Gilderoy Lockhart was yet another villainous DADA teacher of the Harry Potter series, but his backstory reveals that he wasn't always so incompetent.
Gilderoy Lockhart was useless and a fraud, but Harry Potter canon proves he wasn't always that way. When the character was introduced as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry, and Ron could tell immediately that he wasn't what the witches of the wizarding world believed him to be. Lockhart wrote books on his magical adventures, but he seemed to lack any magical skill.
Golderoy Lockhart Was A Moderately Talented Student Before Harry Potter In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Lockhart could not perform even the simplest spells. Though he brought Cornish pixies into his class, he was entirely unable to subdue them when the time came. When he attempted to mend Harry's broken arm, he vanished the boy's bones instead.
Lockhart Was Treated With Favoritism Compared To His Squib Siblings Gilderoy Lockhart's big head didn't start only once he began school. In fact, when he entered Hogwarts for the first time, he expected everyone there to be in awe of his talent. This all came down to his mother, who had convinced him from the time he was little that he was something special. Lockhart's father had been a Muggle, his mother a witch, and his two older sisters had been Squibs.
A lifetime of his mother telling him he was the most talented and charming boy in the world had led Lockhart to believe that he didn't need to work for anything. He wanted celebrity, and he was just skilled enough to find a way to get it with the absolute minimum necessary work. He focused his talents on Memory Charms, used his skill as a writer to put out a bunch of best-selling books, and was finally treated by the rest of the world the way his dear old mother had.
