Houston-born Brouwer defeated 2022 runner-up John Isner and Wolf won over Denis Kudla...

John Isner plays a backhand against Gijs Brouwer during the second round match of the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship at River Oaks Country Club in Houston, TX on Saturday, April 8, 2023.One quarterfinal pairing has been set in the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship with Gijs Brouwer finishing off last year’s runner-up John Isner 6-4, 7-6 and J.J. Wolf closing out Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-1, winning eight of their nine games Saturday morning.

Both matches took three days to complete with rain pounding the River Oaks Country Club clay courts. No further weather issues are expected today, however, and that’s a good thing with 17 matches scheduled. The semifinals and finals will now be played Easter Sunday, the former not before noon and the latter not before 6 p.m.

The Houston-born Brouwer, who also reached the quarters last spring as a qualifier, and the fifth-seeded American Wolf could find themselves back on Court 3 as early as mid-afternoon, depending on how quickly Chile’s Cristian Garin, the 2019 champion, vs. Zizou Bergs and seventh-seeded Marcos Giron vs. qualifier Tomas Machac play out.
