Kapler, 44, is the first MLB manager to take a knee during the anthem.
Several San Francisco Giants players and coaches, including new manager Gabe Kapler, took a knee during the playing of the national anthem Monday night before the team's exhibition game against the Bay Area-rival Oakland A's., were Jaylin Davis, coach Antoan Richardson, Austin Slater and Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of Baseball Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski. He told his Giants team he would be taking a knee before the contest.
The practice of taking a knee during the anthem gained mainstream attention in 2016 when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began to do so to protest police brutality and racial and social injustices. Bruce Maxwell, a former MLB player, took a knee during the anthem while playing for the Athletics in 2017.
Kneeling for the anthem has become a topic of conversation again recently as a possible protest in the sports realm as racial justice movements are seen across the country. Elsewhere Monday night, Los Angeles Angels pitcher Keynan Middleton took a knee during the playing of the anthem, while raising his fist, before the exhibition game against the San Diego Padres.
Kapler played in MLB from 1998-2010, and spent the previous two seasons as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. He is in his first season as manager of the Giants, following the retirement of the legendary Bruce Bochy, who led San Francisco to three World Series championships in 13 years with the club.
